Climate

Bali has a temperate, warm, tropical climate, with an average temperature of 30 degrees Celcius (22 C degrees at night) . The water temperature is about 28 degrees Celcius. The dry season lasts from April to November, the rainy season from December to March.
The coast areas are considerably dryer than the interior of the Island. Especially north-east Bali belongs to the dryer region, which is very remarkable during the rainy season. While there are long and almost daily rain falls in Central Bali, we have less rain along the coast. The showers may be stronger but shorter and the sun will be shining on most days.

Language

The official language is Bahasa Indonesia. A large percentage of the population speaks English. Many older people still are familiar with Dutch language, French, German and Japanese are taught at the Universities.

Time

The time differences:
In summer: MEZ  + 6 hrs.
In Winter : MEZ + 7 hrs.

DO’S And DON’TS

The Balinese are very hospitable and put great emphasis on good manners. Before you photograph someone, ask for permission (which will surely be granted). A little nod or a smile will clear away any obstacles.
In the typical tourist areas in the south, the Balinese are more tolerant and used to the behavior of some tourists. However, this does not mean, that one should not at least try, to follow the basic behaviour traditions.

Some Basic Rules

Never pat a Balinese (children) on the head. The head is considered to be the ritually cleanest part of the body and should never be touched by a stranger.
The left hand is considered unclean. So, when greeting, passing or giving away objects, do it with your right hand.
Never point on people with your forefinger.
Feet are considered unclean and should not be put up or stretched towards a person.
Balinese do not embrace in public.
In case of problems with officials, police or a travel organisation train yourself in patience.
With yelling, gesticulating etc. you will only loose your face and it will lead to nothing. A friendly strategy will reach your goal faster and more effective. The offer of a “supporting tip” should be very discreet.
Drugs – consum and posession – are subject to heavy punishment, even up to the death penalty (also for foreigners)
Bathing naked or topless is strictly forbidden and is also considered impolite.

Temple and Holy Places

Before entering a temple compound, you should give attention to your apparel (shoulders, and legs covered). It is advisable to always have a Sarong and a T-shirt on hand.
Women should not enter the temple during their menstruation.
Temple and shrine walls may not be climbed upon.
Photos of devotees without flash only.
One should always behave rather reserved in a temple. Ask before (at the entrance, the temple guide) if there is something you want to do.
