Abasan Hillside Retreat

The dream and vision of Gaia-Oasis was born on Abasan, our hillside retreat. In Bali, the mountains are a vertical symbol, portraying humanity’s relationship with God. Here, nestled in a hill, covered in lush vegetation, surrounded by sweeping views of forest and sea, you will find a private sanctuary to restore inner balance & serenity.

Abasan offers room for 20 people. In addition to six private bungalows and a guest house spread over 4 hectares, we have a dining terrace, a pool, a meditation cum seminar room and a spa, which are at the disposal of all our guests from either the beach or the mountain.

Homes and Environment

abasan15.jpgThe accent in Abasan is on earth elements and alignment with nature.  Our water is untreated, and comes from a natural spring.  We minimize the use of chemicals; our swimming pool is a saltwater pool and we have built a wastewater garden to filter grey water.  Our organic gardens produce delicious vegetables, following permaculture principles of reuse and recycle.  We also reduce electricity by using low-consumption bulbs and using natural ventilation instead of air-conditioning.  In line with this holistic approach, food at Abasan is vegetarian cum seafood only.

We encourage our guests to keep Abasan tobacco- and alcohol-free.

Every home in Abasan is unique. Each home is located at a discreet distance from its neighbours, to ensure privacy.  Each is also equipped with a fully furnished kitchen, where you can prepare your own meals.

“Mountain Breeze” is the home of our founder Sabine; it is a compact 2 storey building with superb mountain views and 2 bedrooms, one of which is ‘semi-outdoors’ on the balcony.  “Lotus” is larger 2 storey building with its own studio/workshop/ meditation space, and a wonderful garden.  “Marc” and “Lombok” are smaller homes, perfect for one couple; while “Evelyn” and “Moti-Madya” are spacious single-storey bungalows with two double rooms each and their own distinctive touches.

The homes are Balinese style; they use local, natural materials such as stone and timber and are blended into the environment.

Each bungalow has its own outlook; some are surrounded by greenery, some have stark mountain views while yet others look over the valley to the sea.

We also have a guesthouse in Abasan, situated apart from the houses and located close to the swimming pool.  The guesthouse is built over 3 levels, fitted into the slope with magnificent views from the huge terrace.  It has 4 smaller rooms without kitchens, and is suitable for those looking for less space, or who are on a more restricted budget.

Dining Terrace

The dining terrace, in typical open construction, is shaded by trees and bamboo and looks out to a rich, verdant landscape with glimpses of the sea.  It offers room for 20-30 guests.

Bookings can be made for full- and half board, or just for breakfast. Guests can enjoy buffets with a variety of vegetarian dishes from the Indonesian and international kitchen.  A la carte dining is possible, but must be pre-ordered.

For large groups with special needs (raw food, macrobiotic or vegan diets, oryoki meals), you can arrange to use our kitchen in Abasan, on request.
Mineral water, green & herbal teas, Balinese coffee and cocoa are available free of charge throughout the day. Fresh pressed fruit- and vegetable juices, lassies, and specialist coffees can also be ordered.

Salt Water Pool

Our salt water pool is sculpted onto a mountain terrace, with uninterrupted views across the verdant orchards to where the distant ocean meets the sky.  Play, exercise overlooking the resplendent valley, or simply relax on the wide stone terrace.  The pool is large enough for doing laps (17 m x 7 m x 1.4 m deep) and there is a stone terrace alongside (17.6 m x 4.2 m) that is suitable for bodywork and yoga.

Walking Trails & Tours

Abasan is criss-crossed with walking trails that range from gentle strolls to more strenuous full-day treks.  Explore our four hectare estate, hike along the ridge dropping down to the Yeh Lalang river, journey through traditional villages, temples, orchards and jungle gorges. Serious mountain bikers can bash down muddy tracks and rough village byways, or follow the road up to the hill villages and stunning views around Madenan and Bondalem.

Alternatively, you may wish to join our activities & tours.  Be introduced to Balinese Hinduism while learning how to make temple flower offerings, or explore the superb landscape of Bali. We can organize a range of tours to suit many tastes, most of which are within easy reach of Abasan.

Seminar Room

The Seminar room is located directly below the dining terrace, moulded into the side of the hill.  It is equipped with meditation pillows, yoga mats, and a DVD/ CD player cum tape recorder.  Tables, chairs, flipcharts, etc are available as required, and a projector can be ordered. One side of the room is totally open, facing gentle terraces and with valley views.  In this simple yet beautiful setting, you can relax, meditate deeply and reconnect with your vision and creativity.

Bali Samadhi Spa

After a rigorous day in the hills, rejuvenate your body and mind  at Bali Samadhi Spa.  Select from our menu of diverse rebalancing treatments and holistic ayurvedic or Asian- and western- inspired beauty and health treatments.  You can choose to relax for an hour, or pamper yourself for a full day with our special Spa and De Luxe packages. All our ingredients are carefully selected, and our well-trained and friendly staff will ensure you have the care you need to restore your energy and revive your spirit.

Daily Shuttles

Daily motorbike shuttles are provided between the beach and the mountain, and meals can be taken at either area.  You may also participate in all activities provided at the beach resort.

Inner Work and Space to Breathe . . .

Here at Abasan, you can engage at your own pace, and on your own terms, while resting in the healing embrace of nature.  Abasan is based on a philosophy of “self-healing”: do your own thing, or tell us your individual needs, and we will do our best to help.

Please refer to our Healing & MindBody Awareness program to see what Gaia can offer.  Also, depending on the presence of teachers, we sometimes offer individual sessions in a range of modalities (Rebirthing, Sand play, Reiki, Avatar, etc.).  Our manager Yen can also introduce you to the work of our non-profit foundation, or help deepen your understanding of Balinese mysticism and spirituality.

You will find Abasan the ideal place to connect with nature and with your inner self, and to deepen your spiritual practice.
